The day before we went rock hunting for a school project and I snapped this picture. Looking at it now its such a perfect view of her. She picked out her own clothes that day. She got that sweater almost 3 years ago and still wears it all the time. She loves shirts with owls on them and always finds them when we're shopping. She loves wearing leggings and they almost always have holes and knee worn patches in them. She is dainty but knows how to play rough and isn't afraid to get dirty. She doesn't really play with toys. When she has time to do something of her own choice, she will dress up, fill a backpack full of books, notepads, notebooks, pens, pencils, highlighters and makeup. Then she will set up some kind of school and play for hours. Sometimes Will is her student and sometimes she is with friends but she doesn't mind playing alone. She love kick-knacks and has a variety of collections, although none of them are worth monetary value. Her nightstand is always filled with books. She can read in her grade-level but still loves the short little books that give her instant gratification. She almost never makes her bed, even if it will earn her an extra "star" on her job chart. If there is music on, she is dancing. If there is someone around that is younger than her, she is in charge of them. If someone isn't doing something correctly, she lets them know!
One day we were eating some popcorn (one of the food items she has learned how to make on her own). She pulled the bowl away and said, "Mom, I think you've had enough." I gave her a disgusted look and she said, "What? You don't need to eat ALL of it!"
Last week Matt took the kids to the store and they picked out some doughnuts, then went to pay and Matt realized he didn't have his wallet. They walked out to the car and it wasn't there either. Mae was disgusted with him and said, "Thanks a lot, DAD!" Matt told me about how angry the kids were with him and I said, "Wow, you really messed up!" Then Mae says, "Yeah, BIG TIME!"
She doesn't skip a beat. She is witty and clever. She is very brave and stands up for what is right. She worries about people who don't have friends. She cries almost daily but is also very happy shortly after a good cry session. If given the opportunity, her most favorite thing to do is to watch a movie. Since this isn't all of the time and we rarely sit down to watch any TV, she loves it when we do. Recently, Matt took Will somewhere and Mae picked out a movie for me and her to watch. She sat down on the couch and said, "[sigh...] Oh, finally... we can have some alone time..."
I just want to remember everything about this stage. I know now how quickly life is going by.
Since Mae's birthday was on a Sunday, we went out on Saturday night for her celebration. Her choice was, of course, Chuck-a-Rama. She LOVED it. They even sang her Happy Birthday in front of everyone.
Sunday morning, she chose cinnamon rolls for breakfast. Then we opened up gifts. We are now turning the corner into clothes being really fun to receive as gifts.
We got ready for church and Mae was thrilled to take her new scriptures and scripture bag.
In our ward our chorister made these cute cupcakes for the birthday song. All of the kids stand up and put their hands up like candles twinkling while we sing. Then, after the song the birthday child blows out all of the candles and the kids sit down. It is sooooo cute.
For lunch, Mae wanted to have a picnic at the park. It was a gorgeous day!! We loved it so much and just sat there and got some sun for a long time. Mae practiced her new hula hoop at the park.
Mae and I tried to make an ice cream cake. It was kind of a disaster... however, it tasted just fine.
We had such a wonderful day with our sweet girl. I'm so proud of the sweet girl she is growing up to be.
